Keefer House Hotel
Hillsdale, MI
Historic boutique hotel for the modern traveler and resident alike.
The transformation of the historic Keefer House Hotel from a vacant, decaying structure into a vibrant landmark is a testament to the power of collaboration and thoughtful preservation. Originally constructed in 1864, the Keefer Hotel served as a social center for Hillsdale, hosting countless public and private gatherings. Its storied past includes visits from celebrated guests such as Annie Oakley, John Ringling, and “Buffalo Bill” Cody. Today the hotel is being restored and reimagined into luxury boutique hotel featuring 34 guest rooms.
A significant amount of original detailing remains—including mosaic tile flooring, tin ceilings, and decorated cast-iron columns—that has been carefully preserved and showcased throughout. Our design team addressed modern hospitality standards by expanding room sizes, sensitively integrating an elevator for accessibility, and providing welcoming entries at both the front and rear of the building.
The renewed Keefer House Hotel will serve as more than a place to rest a weary head. The redevelopment includes a bar, full-service restaurant, community gathering space, and first-floor retail storefronts, ensuring the building once again plays a vital role in Hillsdale’s downtown life.
