A 1930’s theatre becomes the backdrop for a top-notch distillery and event space
Located on the iconic Lincoln Highway in downtown Rochelle, Illinois, Kennay Farms Distilling is an 8,500 square foot distillery and event facility that makes the most out of former theater space.
In the spirit of the theater
The facade boasts a sleek, linear balcony that resembles the original marquee from the 1930s. Original architectural details including plaster molding, trim, and pilasters were restored throughout the primary spaces.

Studio GWA aimed to strike a balance between preserving historic elements and programming new and complementary uses within the former theater space. The main theater proscenium arch and state boxes set the stage for the production space, while the balcony offers a tasting room with a commanding view of the facility for guests to enjoy. Raw building materials were left exposed and conceptually inspired the new furnishings and finishes palette.
The adaptive reuse of Kennay Farms Distilling honors the legacy of the theater while transforming it into a redesigned production and hospitality destination visitors throughout the Midwest can enjoy.
