From brownfield site to new activity and play space
Northwestern Steel and Wire Park occupies the site of a former industrial factory along Sterling's riverfront. Our strong relationship with the City of Sterling has been cultivated over more than a decade of collaboration on community-focused projects.
For the park shelter, our team worked closely with the Riverfront Commission, comprised of engaged residents and city staff, to design a gathering space that complements the park's many amenities. The shelter provides shaded relief during summer activities, serves as a stage for performances and community events, and offers outdoor heated areas for year-round use.
The building includes public restrooms, lockers, Zamboni storage, mechanical space, and additional storage to support park operations and programming.
Today, Northwestern Steel and Wire Park has transformed a former industrial site into a vibrant community destination featuring a splash pad, playground, walking paths, amphitheater lawn, and ice-skating ribbon. The park has reactivated Sterling's riverfront and created a new place for residents and visitors to gather throughout the year.
